For Academia

Formula SAE Mentor

Fastway Engineering is actively involved as a Formula SAE Mentor and Judge in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Collegiate Design Series (CDS) Competitions that occur all over the world. As a result, we talk to hundreds of students a year about using FEA and CFD for designing vehicles. Open Wheel Race Car, Off-Road Vehicle, Clean Snowmobile, Supermileage, Autonomous Vehicle, or Aircraft . Through these experiences, we get incredible insight into the training needs of soon-to-be-hired engineers. Also, to be perfectly honest, it's how we keep our our curriculum at the top of its game.

Presentation: Optimizing FSAE Designs using the best practices in CAD, FEA, and CFD

This lecture is for active SAE students who realize that in order to optimize your design, you need to try to as many design variations as possible. To do so, the use of Computer Aided Design and Engineering (CAD/CAE) tools, including FEA and CFD is required. These skills are not always part of academic curriculum, but they are certainly required by hiring companies in all of today's major industries. In particular, the Formula SAE program provides the perfect environment for establishing robust CAD/CAE practices, so most of the content is targeted towards that competition, however all CDS teams will benefit from the lecture.

This seminar does not focus on a single specific software package, instead it establishes methodologies that students can apply to any CAD/CAE software. It accomplishes this by addressing the benefits (and limitations!) of the technology as a whole.

Every SAE Lecture is individually customized to the students capability. Discussion topics include:

  • CAD Best Practices and Modeling Techniques
  • Statics & Dynamics using FEA
  • Latest CFD Software & Hardware setups
  • What is worth simulating, and what is not?
  • Correlating Simulations to Test Data
  • FSAE Rules & SES Walk-Through
