Creo Simulate Day 5, Sensitivity Design Study

Overview: Rebuild (or Reuse) the cantilever beam created from the previous Modal Analysis Project, to fix the far face, and run a modal analysis.

Note: Only the first mode needs to be calculated for this exercise.

Pro Tip: Rename the dimensions of the rib so they will be easy to reference later (edit the properties of the dimension).

Next: Using the image to the left as a guide, create a new sensitivity design study that investigates the height of the rib.

Try:

  • Review the options available from the sensitivity study definition menu. While in options, animate the shape change of the model
  • Graph the rib height versus the first mode frequency for each mode

Discuss:

  • The challenges of automating geometry changes
  • The CPU time in the analysis status window

Challenge:

  • Investigate the sensitivity of the following parameters:
    • Rib height: start=4, end=8
    • Diving board thickness: start=6, end=1
  • Plot and record the results of:
    • Rib height vs first modal frequency
    • Beam thickness vs first modal frequency

Next:

  • Copy the global sensitivity analysis to a new one and edit it to be a local sensitivity analysis
  • Run the analysis and plot the same graphs as those from the global sensitivity analysis

Discuss: Similarities and differences of global and local sensitivity analyses.

Next: Download the linked ‘lug’ model below and determine:

  • The sensitivity of the maximum displacement in relation to the size of the radius highlighted in the image to the left
  • What design changes should be made to make the maximum displacement less than 0.005 in relation to the size of the radius

Try: Determine if the maximum displacement is more sensitive to the thickness or the vertical wall the thickness of the base.

Next: Download the linked ‘sheet metal bracket’ model below and determine how sensitive the first five modes are to the thickness of the part.
